A Bit About Montmorillon

View of St Martial - Click to enlarge

Montmorillon is a picturesque town which straddles the river Gartempe. Like many old places it's a mixture of the ancient, the very old, the old and the new. On one side of the river we have the medieval cité with it's Maison Dieu dating from around 1080 when it was founded by Robert du Puy, a returned crusading knight as a hospital and its chapel St Laurent.

The old quarter, Brouard, is dominated by the 10th century Eglise de Notre Dame, with its famous St Catherine of Alexandria crypt. It is home to some fine eating places and bars, and book shops, please check their opening hours.

Vieux Pont/Old Bridge, Montmorillon - click to enlarge

Crossing over the 15th century bridge, alias Vieux Pont, you arrive at the Place Maréchall Leclerc, where each week is held the local Wednesday market.

Leading from the square is the pedestrian Grand' Rue with it's clothes shops, bars and others up to the 19th century Eglise St Martial, with its fabulous stained glass windows and 12th century bell tower, dominating the town. The large free car park in front gives on to, where else but, Finegans Rainbow and the petite Place St Martial.

Behind the church is the Place de la Victoire, where there are regular visiting fairs and also a big braderie/brocante each year in August, also a bar and restaurant.

We must not forget the Majestic Cinema, which is now showing films in English for those of us who have not quite got our ears around the French language yet!
